People who drink heavily tend to keep increasing the amount they drink because they develop an alcohol tolerance. Tolerance is a psychological response that we have to any drug, the more that you consume the more you need to have the same affect.
Part of this dependance is because the wiring in the brain changes with alcohol consumption . This change will mean that you will need to drink more in order to feel the affects, and take away some of that control.
60% of whether you will become alcohol dependant depends on genetics, the rest is due to free will and environmental factors. If there are alcoholics in the family then you are much more likely to suffer from becoming an alcoholic - for this reason you need to be aware of the risks.
If you think that you're struggling with alcohol dependence then you should go to your GP and tell them. Forms of support and treatment such as alcohol rehab could be the solution.
