Frey Wines
There have been few places that have embraced the emerging natural wines quite like the United States of America and that’s where the superb Frey Winery originate from whose produce is available from all good suppliers. As pioneers in the field on natural wine production, it’s really no surprise that they have been commended and certified for excellence by many professional bodies over the years. In fact, they were the US’s very first official organic winery and also the original biodynamic producers throughout the whole country and have not looked back since.
Frey wines have been noted for excellence for many years and perhaps this is down to their production being a family affair that has spanned generations. In total, 27 members of the Frey family have been involved since three decades ago with the descendants in the rich family tree taking up the tradition, from the young to the old.
Frey Winery was actually born however, when they achieved a merit of distinction for a bottle in 1979. Frey’s cabernet grapes won the elders in the family a gold medal before the youngsters in the family realised that this would pave the way for making wines themselves from their very own produce and grapes.
That award was the first for the Frey family but by no means the last because as the years have kept on coming, so have the accolades. It’s been a prosperous history so far for the California based producer and now in their 35th year of production, they show no signs of slowing down or losing their touch.
It’s not just the wines which make this business so economical as they in fact look to conserve wherever they can. As it is a prerequisite for all natural wine production that the ingredients are organically cultivated, the family have ensured that all processes on the vineyard are viable for long term production and this includes keeping a colony of bees on-site. More impressive though is that their actual vineyard only comprises 10% of their plantation – the other 90% is native forest. As you’d expect, they also are strongly opposed to any kind of chemical additives or toxins that can prove harmful to the drinker.
