High Quality Natural Wines
High quality natural wines are made with the least possible intervention possible, usually in the form of chemicals, additives and technological procedures. Chemicals such as pesticides and sulphur are some of the main additions to a lot of ‘normal wine’ we find on the shelves of our supermarkets.
Natural wines are far more pure, safer to drink and are often more rewarding through their taste as you consume it. For people that wish to drink healthier wines, while discovering more about its origin, availability and more informative insights into them will most certainly be interested in natural wines on the market.
So, what characteristics make up a ‘Natural Wine’?
• No synthetic molecules in the vines
• Plowing or other solutions to avoid chemical herbicides
• Use of indigenous yeast
• Low yields
• Handpicked grapes
• Low – or no filtering
• Low – or no sulphites
• Winemaking processes that respect the grapes used
Natural wines do present a number of health benefits when consumed over traditional wines. They have little or no sulphites within their wines, which are known to be the main headache cause after drinking. Natural wines also don’t include those nasty additives, so you aren’t exposing your body to unwelcome and unhealthy outsiders!
Like the idea of getting your hands on some natural wines? Not a problem! Just remember, natural wines tend to be made in small quantities by committed artisans or independent producers from organically or bio-dynamically grown grapes in low yielding vineyards. They are then vinified without sugar, artificial yeasts or enzymes, or recourse, acidification or other adjustments. The most natural wines are neither filtered nor refined, and includes zero or a tiny bit of sulphur – that would go undetected to someone with a sulphite allergy.
Over the past decade, the natural wine sector has progressed massively, in terms of quality and consistency. Early attempts resulted in varied outcomes, with it difficult to master so that every single bottle is perfect. New techniques are now used to ensure that each bottle is perfect when delivered to the customer, ensuring maximum enjoyment for them.
